With the cold temperatures continuing, it’s important to take steps to protect your home, business, and properties from the risk of frozen pipes and costly damage.
Here are some essential tips to help you stay prepared:
- Keep your home/business heated to at least 55°F to avoid freezing pipes.
- Insulate exposed pipes to protect them against the cold.
- Let faucets drip when temperatures fall below 32°F.
- Traveling? Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to check your property daily in case a pipe bursts while you’re away.
Don’t forget to monitor any other properties or businesses you own to ensure they’re properly prepared and protected!
If your pipes freeze:
- Use a hair dryer (NOT an open flame or torch) to carefully thaw pipes.
- If a pipe bursts, immediately turn off your water valve. Make sure you and anyone else in your household know the location of your shut-off valve before an emergency strikes.
- Dry and repair any water damage to prevent mold.
- Contact your insurance provider to understand your coverage and how to file a claim.
If you spot a water leak outside your property, contact the City of Florence immediately at (843) 665-3236 or (843) 665-3191. Though our offices will be closed 12/24-12/26 for the Christmas holiday, these lines are monitored 24/7 and on-call personnel will respond as needed.
Stay safe, warm, and proactive this winter!
