Private schools dominated the 38th Annual Pepsi Carolina Classic presented by South Carolina Federal Credit Union this weekend at South Florence High School.
In the girls’ division, Trinity Collegiate took top honors with just seven players with a 56-48 victory over Wilson and a 52-39 win over host team South Florence.
In the boys’ division, Atlantic Collegiate Academy won their first Carolina Classic Championship in their first appearance at the tournament and the charter school’s second academic year. In round one, the Armada took down defending champions Quality Education Academy Pharaohs 77-45. They continued their winning ways in a 63-53 victory over South Florence before defeating Crestwood in a tight 67-61 game.
On Saturday, Hibbett Sports provided games, kids activities, and giveaways for attendees.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area, which serves kids ages 6-18 at sites in Florence, Hartsville, Hemingway, Lake City, Pamplico, and Timmonsville.
In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. We truly are “The Positive Place For Kids.” Learn more or donate at www.bgcpda.org.
The 39th Carolina Classic has been tentatively scheduled for Dec. 29-31 at Wilson High School.
