Teens at Work

JRT
Around 30 teens are gaining real-life work experience this summer through a variety of programs. More important, even, than the actual job duties are the “soft skills” they learn, such as promptness, courtesy, listening, and responsibility. The job placements range from a car dealer (doesn’t this young man look like he LOVES his job?) to an insurance office, local nonprofits, and the Boys & Girls Club.

Got Art?

Over 100 kids in grades 5-8 took part in special week-long arts camps offered by the Governor’s School For the Arts and Humanities. Club kids in Lake City, Florence, Pamplico, and Hartsville explored dance, music, drama, and visual arts.

Get Smart!

LOTS of kids around the Pee Dee are working hard to stay “up to speed” in their school work so they’ll be ready for fall:
  • 175 across all Clubs are doing the online “Stride Academy” program.
  • 15 in Hartsville are continuing with extra reading help.
  • 8 Florence members are being tutored in reading.
  • Certified teachers in Timmonsville are providing daily instruction to 50 elementary students
  • Over 150 students in Lake City are taking reading/ELA, math, science, and history 3 days a week, all summer (see photo above).
  • 65 members in Florence and Hartsville are completing BGCA’s “Brain Gain,” a project-based curriculum specifically designed to limit summer learning loss.
