2017 November

Tuesday, November 14 (only TWO weeks from #GivingTuesday!)

Aaron, Youth of the YearAaron, one of our members in Florence, has a story to tell you:

As a kid from rural Darlington, SC, I didn’t have many options to choose from. Many times in my life I have had to depend on others to help me overcome life struggles, never dreaming the outcome would be so marvelous!

Being a Boys & Girls Club member since I was six, I’m a true “Club kid!” I’ve been through a lot, but with the help of the Club I challenged myself and now I am here, stronger than ever. I know that anything is possible.

When I first came to the Club, my only goal was to have fun just like any other kid. Even if I arrived in the worst mood, when I came through the club doors, everyone’s smiles would brighten up my day. As a member of the Boys & Girls Club, I was beginning to see a my great future.

Over time I started participating at the Club in other ways, such as helping young members with their homework, helping Club and office staff, running errands, volunteering with teens, and competing for Youth of the Year. The best part was that everyone showed their appreciation by smiling. The smiles of each member lit up my world and it told me I was doing something to help improve my community. I felt like I was walking down the red carpet, being looked up to by all the younger kids, shaking their hands, and expecting them to ask for my autograph. I came to realize I was not only doing good for the community, but most importantly, I was getting one step closer towards finding out who I really was.

Becoming a volunteer at the local Boys & Girls Club changed my life for the better… In short, I decided to pursue excellence.

Sir Isaac Newton said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulder of giants.” I have been lucky: the Boys & Girls Club helped guide me one step closer to my future. They are my giants, and by standing on their shoulders, I now have a spectacular view of how much I am able to achieve.

There are hundreds of kids just like Aaron streaming into our Clubs every day. They need YOU to help them find their GREAT FUTURES! Please join us at the Florence Civic Center on #GivingTuesdayPeeDee: Tuesday,November 28 from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Help us kick off the season of giving.
